Employers need to strongly encourage their employees to use generic version of celebrex called Celecoxib and to get them through online mail order, because even if your employer is providing you with health insurance, your copays and deductibles may be rising to the point where you can't afford to buy the brand-name drug at the corner drugstore. This would drive up competition and encourage the companies to lower their prices on celebrex.

Celecoxib belongs to the group of medications called selective COX-2 inhibitor nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Celebrex is believed to fight pain and inflammation by inhibiting the effect of a natural enzyme that is called COX-2. Unlike these older medications however, it does not interfere with a similar substance, called COX-1, which exerts a protective effect on the lining of the stomach. Celebrex is therefore less likely to cause the bleeding and ulcers that may sometimes accompany sustained use of the older NSAIDs.

How to use Celebrex

Take this medication by mouth with a full glass of water. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this medicine. Being in a horizontal position pushes stomach acid up into your esophagus and could damage it if you're prone to indigestion or heartburn. Take Celebrex once or twice a day, depending on the instructions you receive from your doctor. Taking Celebrex with food will help protect your stomach from possible damage to the lining that Celebrex has been known to cause.

Celebrex Side Effects

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: severe headache unexplained weight gain swelling of the hands or feet pain/swelling/warmth in the groin/calf change in amount of urine difficult/painful swallowing This drug may rarely cause serious liver disease. If you notice any of the following highly unlikely but very serious side effects, stop taking celecoxib and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately: yellowing eyes or skin dark urine persistent stomach/abdominal pain unusual fatigue In the unlikely event you have a serious allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention.

Special Celebrex Precautions

Alcohol use combined with this medicine may increase your risk for stomach bleeding. If you are prone to anemia (loss of red blood cells), ensure that the doctor is aware of this as Celebrex occasionally fosters this problem. Treatment with Celebrex is not recommended in patients with advanced renal disease. Celebrex should not be given to patients with the aspirin triad. Rarely, this medication can cause serious stomach bleeding.

Celecoxib Overdosage

Concomitant administration of fluconazole at 200 mg QD resulted in a two-fold increase in celecoxib plasma concentration. Clinical studies, as well as post marketing observations, have shown that NSAIDs can reduce the natriuretic effect of furosemide and thiazides in some patients. Doses up to 2400 mg/day for up to 10 days in 12 patients did not result in serious toxicity. Symptoms following acute NSAID overdoses are usually limited to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain, which are generally reversible with supportive care. Gastrointestinal bleeding can occur.

No information is available regarding the removal of celecoxib by hemodialysis, but based on its high degree of plasma protein binding (greater than 97%) dialysis is unlikely to be useful in overdose. Emesis and/or activated charcoal (60 to 100 g in adults, 1 to 2 g/kg in children) and/or osmotic cathartic may be indicated in patients seen within 4 hours of ingestion with symptoms or following a large overdose. There are no specific antidotes. No overdoses of Celebrex were reported during clinical trials

Can you get high off Celebrex? How much Tylonol or other OTC drugs would it take to make you high?

Question: Celebrex can double the risk of having a heart attack, isn't it?

Answer: Several studies have looked at the heart risks associated with Celebrex, but experts want to see more research. Just two weeks ago, a study showed that Celebrex did not seem to carry the same heart attack risk as Vioxx. Other ongoing research is continuing to look at the potential for heart risks from Celebrex.
