Employers need to strongly encourage their employees to use generic version of singulair called Montelukast and to get them through online mail order, because even if your employer is providing you with health insurance, your copays and deductibles may be rising to the point where you can't afford to buy the brand-name drug at the corner drugstore. This would drive up competition and encourage the companies to lower their prices on singulair.

Generic Singulair is used to prevent asthma symptoms, including those that occur during the day and at night-time. It also prevents the narrowing of airways triggered by exercise. Generic Singulair tablets contain the active ingredient montelukast, which is a type of medicine known as a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, which are chemicals released by the body as part of allergic and inflammatory reactions.

Therapeutic indications

Generic Singulair is indicated in the treatment of asthma as add-on therapy in those patients with mild to moderate persistent asthma who are inadequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroids. In those asthmatic patients in whom Generic Singulair is indicated in asthma, Generic Singulair can also provide symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Generic Singulair is also indicated in the prophylaxis of asthma in which the predominant component is exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. The therapeutic effect of Generic Singulair on parameters of asthma control occurs within one day.

Generic Singulair Precautions

Patients should be advised never to use oral montelukast to treat acute asthma attacks and to keep their usual appropriate rescue medication for this purpose readily available. Do not take Generic Singulair if you have an allergy to Generic Singulair or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet, the packaging is torn or shows signs of tampering, the expiry date on the pack has passed. There are no data demonstrating that oral corticosteroids can be reduced when montelukast is given concomitantly. Treatment with montelukast does not alter the need for patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma to avoid taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.

How Montelukast works

Generic Singulair belongs to a group of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists. It works by blocking substances in your lungs called leukotrienes that cause narrowing and swelling of airways. Leukotrienes can cause allergic rhinitis symptoms. By blocking leukotrienes, Generic Singulair improves seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Special Warning!

This medicine should never be used to treat asthma attacks - you should keep your normal reliever inhaler, eg salbutamol or terbutaline, ready for this. Consult your doctor if you need to use your reliever more frequently than normal, or if it becomes less effective at treating asthma attacks. If you find that your asthma is improved after receiving treatment with this medicine you should not stop taking any of your other medicines, in particular any corticosteroid inhalers or tablets. Montelukast is not a substitute for corticosteroids.
